Chapter 2: ...Foundations of the Daily 5 p.17-25

"If we are instructing so much that the students don't get a chance to read, or if we are counting working in a workbook as reading time, then we are not giving them enough time to become better readers and writers." p.24 paragraph 3

Reflection:

What "worthwhile and meaningful activities" make up the bulk of your instructional time? How does this impact your students' reading?

  2. When Terri and I started talking this spring about what we could all read this summer so that we would have some shared vocabulary and background knowledge to work with, I didn't really know much about this book. I just knew that in order to get our students to the next level as readers and writers we had to find some way to ensure they actually have lots of time to read real books and write for real reasons every day. I am very excited about the structure supplied by the Daily Five because it allows for just that. It also seems like it would be much, much easier to facilitate than centers and worksheets, while at the same time giving students more ownership of their learning.

I love the analogy of the seven minute soccer practice and how no one would think that could possibly be sufficient for preparing athletes to improve their soccer skills or stamina. We must give students time every day to read and write in order to improve their skills and develop stamina.

  3. I am glad you are enjoying the book! The soccer analogy reminds me of what Kelly Gallaghersaid about Michael Phelps..." I think someone provided him with a pool so he could practice swimming." I agree we need to provide our students with booka and time to read! My theme for the year is "Going for the Gold"... we are going to talk about what it takes to achieve a gold medal and set goals for ourselves to get our gold medals. Enjoy your reading!

  4. I agree with both of you! This past school year I felt that I used a lot of TAKS Worksheet pages to "teach" reading. To piggy back on the Michael Phelps anagloy, I feel that by just giving the students test pratice I'm only having them swim the 50 yard back stroke over and over again. Michael Phelps does more than one race over and over and over again. The same is ture for our readers. They need this daily five to achieve the higher level we expect of them!

  5. On a small A-ha... one thing that ALWAYS bothered me while teaching first grade was making them close their book or put away their draft book because the center timer went off... they would give me an "ugh" and it felt so wrong, but I wasn't sure how to fix it w/o messing up my whole rotation :)
